Route at a glanceQuito → Otavalo → Cotacachi → Baños de Agua Santa → Quito

Tucked between Colombia and Peru, this small South American country is filled with enormous landscapes: soaring volcanoes, crater lakes, waterfalls, colorful markets, colonial cities, and mountain towns that still feel deeply connected to their traditions.

Over 10 days, we’ll follow the Andes from Quito into Ecuador’s northern highlands before continuing south to Baños de Agua Santa.

We’ll wander the cobblestone streets of Quito’s UNESCO-protected historic center, ride high above the city on the Teleférico, hike in the shadow of Pichincha Volcano, and explore one of South America’s most celebrated indigenous markets.

We’ll visit artisan towns, stand beside an ancient volcanic crater lake, soak in natural thermal waters, hike to the thundering Pailón del Diablo waterfall, and take in the dramatic scenery surrounding Tungurahua Volcano.

But the heart of this trip isn’t simply where we go.

It’s having the time to wander a market instead of rushing through it. Sitting down for a meal together after a day in the mountains. Meeting the people behind the textiles and crafts you bring home. Finding the café, viewpoint, shop, or little moment that wasn’t necessarily on the itinerary.

This is a small-group journey designed for travelers who want to see somewhere beautiful without feeling like they’re being shuffled through it.

Less checklist. More connection. More discovery.

This is Ecuador… colorful, dramatic, wildly beautiful, and still wonderfully underrated.

Day by day

Arrival in Quito

Arrive in Ecuador and settle into Quito, one of the highest capital cities in the world, surrounded by the dramatic peaks of the Andes.

Today is intentionally easy. Settle in, acclimate to the altitude, get your first feel for the city, and meet the travelers you’ll be sharing the next 10 days with.

Stay: Quito

Cobblestone streets, churches & colonial history

Our first full day begins in Quito’s UNESCO-listed historic center.

We’ll explore the city on foot, wandering through colonial plazas, narrow streets, and centuries-old neighborhoods while visiting some of Ecuador’s most historic churches.

Rather than simply seeing the landmarks, today is about slowing down enough to notice the details: the balconies, courtyards, street vendors, architecture, and everyday rhythm of one of South America’s most beautifully preserved historic cities.

Stay: Quito

Teleférico de Quito & Pichincha Volcano

Today we trade city streets for mountain views.

We’ll ride the Teleférico high above Quito, climbing to more than 12,000 feet and opening up incredible views across the city and surrounding Andes. From the top, we’ll spend time exploring the trails around Pichincha Volcano.

It’s one of those days that reminds you just how dramatic Ecuador really is: crisp mountain air, huge skies, and volcanoes stretching across the horizon.

Stay: Quito

Indigenous culture, handwoven textiles & waterfalls

Today we travel into Ecuador’s northern highlands. Our destination is Otavalo, home to one of South America’s best-known indigenous markets.

Spend time wandering stalls filled with handwoven blankets, textiles, jewelry, artwork, leather goods, and traditional crafts, many sold directly by the artisans who made them.

Afterward, we’ll leave the market behind and head into nature for a hike to a beautiful nearby waterfall.

Culture in the morning. Mountains in the afternoon. Exactly the kind of day this trip is built around.

Stay: Otavalo area

A crater lake in the Andes

Today takes us to one of northern Ecuador’s most striking landscapes. Laguna Cuicocha is a deep volcanic crater lake surrounded by mountains, farmland, and sweeping Andean scenery.

We’ll spend time exploring the area, enjoying the views, and taking in the quieter side of Ecuador. There’s no need to rush through a place like this.

Sometimes the best part of travel is simply standing somewhere beautiful long enough to actually take it in.

Stay: Otavalo area

Artisans, wandering & dinner together

Today we visit Cotacachi, a smaller Andean town known for its artisans, leatherwork, and laid-back atmosphere. You’ll have time to wander the shops, browse local goods, grab a coffee, and explore at your own pace.

After several days of hiking and exploring, this is intentionally a slower day.

Tonight, we’ll come together for a group dinner: a chance to relax, share stories from the trip so far, and enjoy the simple pleasure of a good meal in good company.

Stay: Otavalo/Cotacachi area

Thermal waters & a change of scenery

Today we begin our journey south toward Baños de Agua Santa, and this is one of those travel days where the journey is part of the experience.

Along the way, we’ll stop to soak in natural thermal waters before continuing into the increasingly lush mountains surrounding Baños.

As we arrive, Ecuador begins to look completely different. Waterfalls tumble from mountainsides. Green valleys replace the drier highlands. And the towering Tungurahua Volcano looms above the town.

Stay: Baños de Agua Santa

Into Ecuador’s waterfall country

Today we experience one of Ecuador’s most spectacular natural sights. Pailón del Diablo, the Devil’s Cauldron, is a massive waterfall crashing through a deep, lush canyon outside Baños.

We’ll hike down through the surrounding forest and get close enough to feel the mist and hear the thunder of the water.

It’s powerful, beautiful, and slightly wild. The kind of place that makes you stop taking pictures for a minute and simply stare.

Stay: Baños de Agua Santa

Tungurahua & Casa del Árbol

Our final full day brings us high into the mountains surrounding Baños. We’ll explore the landscapes beneath Tungurahua Volcano before visiting the whimsical Casa del Árbol.

Perched above the valley, it’s famous for its simple swing overlooking the mountains, but the real draw is the setting. Wide-open views. Mist rolling through the Andes. Green valleys stretching below.

It’s a fitting place to slow down and take in where the last nine days have taken us.

Stay: Baños de Agua Santa

Return to Quito & departure

After breakfast, we’ll begin our journey back to Quito for departure flights.

Ten days earlier, Ecuador may have simply been somewhere on the map. Now it’s cobblestone streets and mountain air. Handwoven textiles and crater lakes. Thermal waters, waterfalls, shared dinners, unexpected stops, and stories you didn’t have before you came.

You came to discover Ecuador. You leave understanding why some of the best places are the ones everyone else hasn’t discovered yet.
